Title I

What is Title I?

Title I is a federal program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). Title I funds programs and outlines requirements to improve academic achievement for educationally at-risk students. The goal of Title 1 programs is to provide extra services and activities that support students to meet or exceed the State's expectations in math and language arts as assessed on the State's challenging standardized assessments.

What is the benefit for my student?

Title 1 programs provide your student will supplemental support beyond what is provided in the regular classroom.

Who is eligible for Title 1 services?

Each school district defines the criteria by which students are recommended for Title 1 services. Alloway Township School uses multiple measures to identify students with a demonstrated need for extra assistance. Title 1 also serves students who attend private schools.  Alloway Township School offers a targeted assistance program model that uses Title I funds to support students to academically success.  Targeted assistance programs provide academic support, interventions, and services for an identified group of students who are at risk of not meeting State standards.  Criteria used by ATS  to identify students for services include a combination of the following measures: State standardized test scores, Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) scores, and other related assessments.

How does Title 1 funding work?

The federal government provides funding to the state who, in turn, disperses the funds to schools based on the number of low-income students attending that school. Students do not have to be from low-income families to receive Title 1 services. The school identifies its students based on its own criteria.

What are some of the features of Title 1 programs?

Title 1 programs generally offer designated teachers and/or aides, professional development for the designated staff, supplementary materials, and small group instruction.Title 1 programs can be delivered before, during, and/or after school.

How can I support my Title 1 student?

Research shows that family engagement in a student's education is a great predictor of academic success. That’s why Title I  program regulations require family involvement in activities at every school where these federal funds support effective teaching and engaged learning.  Districts and school staff have a responsibility to promote and strengthen parental involvement within their Title I programs.  Review the School-Parent Compact for an outline of this partnership. Contact Melissa Strawderman at strawdermanm@allowayschool.org  if you are interested in serving on our Title I Parent Advisory Committee to support and provide feedback for Title I programs at ATS.
